Cornus sanguinea nssp. czerniaewii Grosset — Ukrainian blood-twig dogwood

Introduction

Ukrainian blood-twig dogwood is the named infraspecific hybrid formed where the nominate European blood-twig dogwood and the southeastern ssp. australis meet. Its formal name, Cornus sanguinea nssp. czerniaewii, expresses that relationship directly: it is not treated as a third independent subspecies, but as a recurrent hybrid combination within the species complex (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026; Deasy et al. 2026).

Plants are expected to bridge parental characters, especially the indumentum patterns used to distinguish ssp. sanguinea and ssp. australis. Because intermediate dogwoods can be difficult to diagnose from a single specimen, geographic context and populations of both parents are important to identification.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Ukrainian blood-twig dogwood has no established horticultural identity comparable with selected red-stem cultivars of C. sanguinea. Material from hybrid zones is more useful as documented botanical material than as a garden trade name.

If maintained in living collections, accessions should keep locality and parental context. Vegetative propagation preserves a particular hybrid genotype, whereas seedlings may recombine toward either parental subspecies.

Conservation Concerns

A separate extinction-risk category is not appropriate for a recurrent nssp.. Its conservation value lies in the integrity of contact zones between ssp. sanguinea and ssp. australis. Protecting those wild populations also preserves the evolutionary process that generates nssp. czerniaewii.
