Introduction
European blood-twig dogwood is a widespread deciduous shrub or small tree of Europe and western Asia, familiar from woodland edges, hedgerows, scrub, and disturbed ground. Young stems often develop red to purple pigmentation, while the white flower clusters are followed by black fruits. It is one of the best-known Eurasian members of Subgenus Thelycrania and has a long horticultural history (Deasy et al. 2026; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).
Tree TSAR treats the species as an infraspecific complex rather than a single undifferentiated unit. The nominate ssp. sanguinea is joined by accepted ssp. australis, provisionally accepted ssp. cilicica, and the Georgian var. koenigii [C.K.Schneid.] TSAR*. Intermediate populations traditionally called ssp. hungarica are kept on watch rather than accepted as an established evolutionary subspecies. The natural hybrid between ssp. australis and ssp. sanguinea is treated separately as nssp. czerniaewii.
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Blood-twig dogwood is widely grown for colored winter stems, dense screening, wildlife value, and tolerance of pruning. Coppicing or hard renewal pruning can encourage vigorous young shoots with the strongest stem color. Cultivars selected for bark or foliage are horticultural clones and should not be confused with the botanical subspecies and variety recognized by Tree TSAR (Deasy et al. 2026).
The species also has a long history of utilitarian use. Flexible shoots have been used for basketry and similar woven work, while the hard wood served for small tools and other durable objects. Seeds have historically been pressed for oil in parts of Europe.
Conservation Concerns
At the broad species level, European blood-twig dogwood is widespread and not considered globally threatened. It can also naturalize outside its native range. Conservation relevance lies more in the geographic structure of wild populations than in survival of the species as a whole.
For ex situ work, collections should record subspecies or variety when it can be determined reliably, together with provenance. A garden clone of broad C. sanguinea cannot substitute for preserving the distinct Black Sea, Turkish, or Georgian entities recognized within the complex.
