Introduction
Black Sea blood-twig dogwood is the southeastern subspecies of Cornus sanguinea, distributed from parts of southeastern and east-central Europe through the Black Sea region and Caucasus toward northern Iraq. It resembles the nominate subspecies closely but is traditionally distinguished by the pattern of two-armed hairs on the leaves, with the arms more nearly equal in length in ssp. australis (Deasy et al. 2026; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).
Tree TSAR accepts ssp. australis with moderate confidence. A phylogenomic result placing sampled material unexpectedly close to Chinese C. walteri is not treated as decisive because the geographic and biological implication is extraordinary and the identity or provenance of the sequenced material requires independent verification (Du et al. 2023).
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Cultivation is broadly comparable with other forms of C. sanguinea: a cold-tolerant, pruneable shrub suited to hedges, woodland edges, and naturalistic plantings. There is no reason to equate ornamental red-stem cultivars automatically with ssp. australis; botanical identity depends on wild provenance and morphology, not stem color alone.
For research collections, authenticated Black Sea and Caucasian material is particularly valuable because it can test the unresolved genomic signal and clarify the boundaries with var. koenigii and the nominate subspecies.
Conservation Concerns
No separate global threat category is emphasized for ssp. australis. The parent species is widespread, but lineage-level conservation should preserve well-documented southeastern populations rather than assuming that common C. sanguinea elsewhere represents the same genetic diversity.
The highest priority is good provenance: DNA samples and vouchers from unambiguously wild native-range populations would simultaneously improve conservation planning and resolve the current phylogenomic conflict.
