Finding a Plant Even When Its Name Has Changed
Plant names accumulate history. A species may move between genera, be described more than once, or carry old infraspecific names that later treatments no longer recognize. Hybrid plants add another complication because their names can encode relationships between parental taxa.
Tree TSAR keeps one accepted page for each accepted taxon while allowing many useful names and search forms to lead to it. Formal synonyms preserve nomenclatural history, search aliases accommodate useful non-synonym terms, and hybrid-aware search recognizes common ways users type the multiplication sign.
What Is a Synonym?
A synonym is a scientific name that a particular taxonomic treatment considers to apply to a taxon accepted under another name. Some synonyms are earlier combinations of the same nomenclatural type; others began as independently described taxa later judged to belong within the same accepted entity.
A synonym is therefore not simply a spelling mistake. It can be validly published, legitimate, historically important, and still not be the accepted name in the current treatment.
One Accepted Page, Many Ways to Reach It
Tree TSAR does not create a second accepted page for each synonym. Searching Salisburia biloba (L.) Hoffmanns. can lead to Ginkgo biloba L., because Plants of the World Online and Tree TSAR treat the former name as a synonym of the latter. The search result can identify the connection with a note such as Matched synonym: Salisburia biloba (L.) Hoffmanns.
This preserves the historical name without making one biological treatment appear to be several accepted taxa.
Why Synonyms Stay Visible
Synonyms connect current classification with old floras, scientific literature, herbarium labels, nursery catalogues, legal records, and databases. Tree TSAR therefore preserves the editorial synonym string, including authorship and nomenclatural status where relevant.
Formal synonym disclosures are used primarily for families, genera, species, and infraspecific or terminal taxa. Higher Supertaxonomy groups are better served by narrative discussion of historical names when those names matter.
External Synonym Lists Are Evidence, Not Instructions
Major databases are indispensable, but an outside synonym treatment does not automatically override a Tree TSAR accepted taxon. A database can follow a different circumscription, lag behind a specialist revision, or make an editorial choice among several defensible alternatives.
Tree TSAR evaluates synonymy before incorporating it. Most importantly, importing an outside synonym must never silently demote an accepted Tree TSAR taxon.
Search Aliases Are Not Synonyms
A Search Alias is a retrieval aid, not a nomenclatural claim. It might be an alternate transliteration, historical vernacular name, common misspelling worth supporting, horticultural trade term, or another approved phrase that helps a reader find the page.
Formal synonyms belong in the scientific naming history. Search aliases merely broaden retrieval. Keeping the two fields separate protects the meaning of the Synonyms disclosure.
Search Is Forgiving; Display Is Exact
Readers do not always type scientific names exactly as a botanical editor would display them. Authorships are often omitted, diacritics may be unavailable on a keyboard, and rank abbreviations vary.
Tree TSAR therefore normalizes predictable search forms behind the scenes while preserving the authoritative display text. A diacritic-free query can find a name containing a diacritic; subsp. can help find a Tree TSAR name displayed with ssp.; authorship-free scientific names remain searchable.
Normalization improves retrieval. It does not rewrite the public taxonomic record.
Hybrid Names Add Another Search Problem
Botanical hybrid names use the multiplication sign ×, but many keyboards make that character inconvenient. Tree TSAR therefore allows reasonable keyboard substitutes while retaining × in the accepted display.
Yoshino cherry provides a real nomenclatural example: Prunus × yedoensis Matsum. A reader should be able to find the accepted record with searches such as:
- Prunus × yedoensis
- Prunus x yedoensis
- Prunus X yedoensis
- Prunus yedoensis, where omission of the marker can be interpreted safely for that known record
The search logic must be syntax-aware. Ordinary letters in names such as Taxus, Buxus, or Saxifraga are not hybrid markers and must not be altered.
Parentage Provides More Information Than the Name Alone
A hybrid page can also display a parentage formula such as Parent A × Parent B. The parents can link to their Tree TSAR pages when those destinations exist. The formula communicates biological origin; the accepted scientific name communicates nomenclatural identity.
A real intergeneric example is × Amelasorbus jackii Rehder, which Plants of the World Online accepts as the hybrid Amelanchier alnifolia × Sorbus scopulina.
Hybrid Origin Is Not Always a Simple Label
Some hybrid populations are transient; others become persistent, fertile, or independently evolving. Ancient introgression can also leave a lineage with reticulate ancestry without making every descendant taxon a permanently marked hybrid.
Tree TSAR therefore separates the biological question of evolutionary independence from the nomenclatural question of what name correctly applies. A stable lineage does not lose a formally applicable nothotaxon marker merely because it is stable, and an ordinary taxon does not acquire × merely because some ancient hybridization occurred in its history.
Chimeras and Synthetic Entities
Sexual hybrids are only one form of biological combination. Graft chimeras contain genetically distinct tissues and use + under cultivated-plant nomenclatural conventions. Tree TSAR reserves ∇ for a narrow class of highly synthetic, engineered, or artificially assembled entities under its own editorial system.
These symbols should not be treated as interchangeable search decorations. They communicate different kinds of origin.
Ranking Search Results
An exact accepted-name match should outrank a loose partial match. Exact synonym identity should likewise outrank a substring that happens to contain the same word.
For example, a query for exactly Salisburia should favor the historical generic synonym and lead to Ginkgo L., whereas Salisburia biloba should lead to Ginkgo biloba L.. Tree TSAR search should infer the intended botanical identity rather than simply maximize the number of matching strings.
Why Synonyms Do Not Automatically Become Redirect Pages
Scientific names can change repeatedly, and one accepted species can accumulate many synonyms. Creating a permanent public route for every historical name would multiply URLs while blurring the distinction between accepted taxa and lookup identities.
Tree TSAR instead keeps stable routes for accepted records and makes synonyms discoverable through search and on-page disclosure. The accepted taxon remains the durable destination.
