Introduction
Labrador bunchberry dogwood is a naturally occurring diploid hybrid of Cornus canadensis ssp. pristina and C. suecica. Like its parents, it is a low, rhizomatous perennial of cool northern habitats. Gervais & Blondeau (2003) described the hybrid from the zone where the two diploid parental lineages meet in eastern Canada and documented 2n = 22, intermediate floral and vegetative characters, and partly sterile pollen. The white to violet-tinged flowers and irregularly tiered leaf whorls can make plants look intermediate even in the field, although morphology alone is not always sufficient to identify members of this reticulate complex.
Tree TSAR uses the parent formula C. canadensis ssp. pristina × C. suecica rather than the broader formula C. canadensis × C. suecica. That distinction follows the cytogeographic and genomic evidence: the diploid pristina lineage is the C. canadensis parent involved in the named hybrid (Gervais & Blondeau 2003; Sun et al. 2025). The name C. × lepagei also resolves a long-standing nomenclatural confusion in Atlantic Canada. Reports published as “C. × intermedia” or as the western species C. unalaschkensis have been referred to C. × lepagei in Newfoundland and Labrador, whereas true C. intermedia is part of the synonymy of C. unalaschkensis (Meades & Brouillet 2026).
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Cornus × lepagei is primarily a wild hybrid and has little established horticultural identity separate from its parents. Its compact, rhizomatous habit and showy bracts could suit cool, acidic woodland or heath gardens, but material should be documented by provenance rather than treated as a named cultivar or as ordinary C. canadensis. The ecological setting of its parents suggests moist, humus-rich, acidic substrates and cool summers are more appropriate than warm, dry garden conditions.
For scientific collections, the hybrid is especially valuable as a living example of gene flow within Arctocrania. The 2025 genomic analysis showed that hybridization and introgression have repeatedly shaped the bunchberry complex rather than representing a single exceptional event (Sun et al. 2025). Maintaining parent identity and collection locality is therefore more informative than propagating anonymous hybrid material.
Conservation Concerns
No separate global conservation assessment is available for C. × lepagei. It is native to eastern Canada, with current Canadian backbone data including Labrador, Newfoundland, and Québec (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026). In Newfoundland and Labrador it is now understood to be more widespread than the northern Labrador distribution reported in the original publication (Meades & Brouillet 2026).
Because this is a naturally recurring hybrid, its conservation value lies in functioning contact zones between the two diploid parents rather than in treating hybridization itself as a threat. Loss or fragmentation of sites where C. canadensis ssp. pristina and C. suecica remain sympatric would reduce opportunities for the hybrid to form, while careless identification can obscure its true distribution.
