Introduction
Subarctic bunchberry dogwood is the diploid northern and western subspecies of Cornus canadensis. It was described to give a formal name to a cytogeographic lineage with 2n = 22 and pollen generally smaller than 25 µm, contrasting with the predominantly tetraploid nominate subspecies and its larger pollen. The original study traced the diploid cytotype from northern Québec westward across northern and western Canada to Alaska, while noting that the exact contact boundaries still required finer sampling (Gervais & Blondeau 2003).
The subspecies has gained stronger biological support since its description. Sun et al. (2025) recovered a distinct Cc3 genomic ancestry and explicitly associated it with ssp. pristina, showing that the old chromosome-based distinction corresponds to population-genomic structure rather than representing an arbitrary cytological label. It is also the C. canadensis parent of C. × lepagei, the diploid hybrid with C. suecica.
Morphologically, ssp. pristina can be difficult to distinguish from ssp. canadensis without cytological or pollen evidence. For that reason, historical names and observations from the broad species should not be assigned to one subspecies solely from geography.
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Cultivation requirements are essentially those of C. canadensis: cool conditions, acidic humus-rich soil, steady moisture, and limited competition. There is no established horticultural selection system that corresponds to ssp. pristina, so a plant sold simply as bunchberry should not be assumed to represent this subspecies.
For botanical gardens, restoration work, or research collections, the principal practical distinction is provenance. Propagating verified diploid material with collection locality attached preserves information that is lost when all bunchberry accessions are pooled under a species-only label. Seed retains sexual recombination within the lineage, whereas division or other clonal propagation preserves an individual genotype.
Conservation Concerns
No separate global conservation assessment is available for ssp. pristina. Its recognition illustrates why the broad security of C. canadensis cannot substitute for lineage-level documentation. A genetically coherent diploid component may be locally common yet still be poorly represented in ex situ collections or occurrence databases because it is morphologically cryptic.
The most useful conservation practice is therefore to document verified diploid populations, retain voucher and locality data with collections, and avoid assuming that every northern C. canadensis record belongs to ssp. pristina. The 2025 genomic evidence makes this lineage a biologically meaningful conservation unit even though formal threat data remain sparse (Sun et al. 2025).
