Hydrangea pingtungensis S.S.Ying

Pingtung climbing hydrangea

Introduction

Pingtung climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea pingtungensis S.S.Ying) is a recently described Taiwanese member of the climbing-hydrangea assemblage, provisionally placed in Subgenus Hydrangea, Section Calyptranthe. The species was published by S.S. Ying in 2023 and is currently accepted by Plants of the World Online. Its recognition expands a section that had otherwise been understood to contain two species, the widespread Asian H. anomala and the northeastern Asian H. petiolaris.

That apparent expansion of Section Calyptranthe requires some caution. The comprehensive infrageneric analysis of Yang et al. (2024) sampled Section Calyptranthe as two of two recognized species, represented by H. anomala and H. petiolaris. H. pingtungensis was not included, so the strong phylogenetic evidence supporting the section and its sister relationship with Section Cornidia does not independently establish the position of the Pingtung species. Its sectional placement is therefore best regarded as provisional pending direct molecular study.

Its species boundary also deserves direct testing because Taiwan already supports native populations assigned to H. anomala. Taiwanese treatments include H. glabra Hayata, a name based on Taiwanese material, within the synonymy of H. anomala and describe the latter as a climbing shrub occurring in montane forests. Consequently, the critical comparison is not simply between H. pingtungensis and continental H. anomala, but between the newly named species and the full range of variation represented by Taiwanese H. anomala, including material historically called H. glabra.

For the present treatment, H. pingtungensis is retained as a distinct species rather than synonymized on the basis of incomplete evidence. Its recognition by current taxonomic authorities provides a reasonable working hypothesis, but resolution will require direct study of the protologue and type material, comparative examination of Taiwanese populations, and preferably nuclear or population-level molecular sampling. Until those tests are available, both the species boundary and its precise relationship within Section Calyptranthe remain deliberately open to revision.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

No well-documented horticultural history or established cultivar tradition has been located for H. pingtungensis. This contrasts sharply with H. petiolaris, one of the best-known ornamental climbing hydrangeas. Because the Pingtung species is both recently named and incompletely characterized in readily accessible literature, horticultural claims based merely on its presumed resemblance to other members of Section Calyptranthe would be premature.

Documented living collections with reliable wild provenance could eventually be especially valuable. Such material would permit observation of its persistent architecture, flowering characters, and horticultural behavior while also providing material for comparison with Taiwanese H. anomala.

Conservation Concerns

No formal conservation assessment located during this review establishes the status of H. pingtungensis. Its recent description and presently limited documentation make absence of a published threat category uninformative about its actual security in the wild.

Clarifying its taxonomy is itself a conservation priority. If populations assigned to H. pingtungensis constitute a genuinely narrow Taiwanese lineage, their conservation importance may be substantially different from what would be inferred if they fall within the broader variation of H. anomala. Useful next steps include confirmation of known populations, documentation of habitat and population size, comparison with historical and contemporary herbarium collections, and genetically anchored sampling across Taiwanese H. anomala and H. pingtungensis.
