Introduction
Burmese bunchberry dogwood is the most geographically and morphologically distinctive living member of Arctocrania. Unlike the circumboreal dwarf dogwoods, it is an evergreen Sino-Himalayan rhizomatous herb with persistent leathery leaves, revolute margins, a small mucro at the leaf tip, and dark purple true flowers. Wahlsteen et al. (2021) showed that it diverged first within the living Arctocrania lineage and formally described the species after its rediscovery in northern Myanmar, resolving a plant first collected by Frank Kingdon-Ward in 1937 but left unnamed for decades.
The range changed materially in 2026. Soni et al. (2026) documented C. wardiana at about 3200 m in East Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh, India, where it grows on moss-covered substrates in high subalpine Abies–Betula forest. This record extends the species westward into the Eastern Himalaya and means that older accounts describing it as endemic to Myanmar are no longer current.
Its phylogenetic position gives the species unusual evolutionary importance. The 2021 analysis used nrITS plus plastid matK and rbcL data together with morphometrics from 60 populations and 102 dwarf-dogwood specimens. The authors interpreted C. wardiana as a southern relict of an ancestral lineage whose modern distribution was divided by Neogene climatic change, producing the striking Arctic–Sino-Himalayan disjunction seen today (Wahlsteen et al. 2021).
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Cornus wardiana has become a specialist collector’s plant rather than a mainstream groundcover. Several clones are now grown in Europe and North America, but cultivation experience remains limited. Successful growers have emphasized a moist, acidic, humus-rich but freely draining substrate that mimics the moss-covered forest floor, along with regular watering and protection from drying (Deasy et al. 2026).
The evergreen foliage and small white-bracted inflorescences distinguish it horticulturally from the deciduous or seasonally renewing circumboreal bunchberries. Trees and Shrubs Online reports survival in Zone 8 cultivation and notes that a small number of clones are maintained by enthusiasts. Because wild populations remain few and geographically isolated, cultivated material should retain collection provenance whenever known; unnamed propagation is useful horticulturally but less valuable for ex situ conservation.
The broader Arctocrania genomic study also highlights C. wardiana as a potential source of evergreen characters for future breeding, although this is a research possibility rather than an established breeding program (Sun et al. 2025).
Conservation Concerns
The conservation picture is unsettled and changed rapidly with the Indian discovery. The original species treatment and current Trees and Shrubs Online account regarded C. wardiana as Least Concern, partly because its remote montane habitat was thought to offer protection (Wahlsteen et al. 2021; Deasy et al. 2026). Soni et al. (2026), after documenting the Arunachal Pradesh population, argued for a much higher level of concern because only a few isolated sites are confirmed and the species occupies a narrow high-elevation habitat.
The 2026 paper’s abstract is internally inconsistent, describing the species as both “provisionally” Near Threatened and “currently” Critically Endangered under IUCN criteria. Given that inconsistency, the paper is best treated as evidence of serious concern rather than as a settled formal Red List status. The robust conclusion is that C. wardiana is no longer a Myanmar endemic, yet it remains known from very few eastern Himalayan localities and depends on cool, moss-rich subalpine habitat. A formal, range-wide assessment incorporating both Myanmar and Indian populations is warranted.
Ex situ cultivation is already meaningful because the wild range is so limited, but cultivated abundance must not be confused with security in nature. Preserving multiple documented wild provenances, rather than repeatedly cloning the same horticultural accessions, would better capture the species’ remaining genetic diversity.
