Introduction

Walter dogwood is one of the most tree-like members of Subgenus Thelycrania, capable of forming a substantial trunk and reaching roughly 17 m. Mature bark becomes deeply fissured into rectangular blocks, while large white spring inflorescences are followed by black fruit. The species is widespread across China in mixed forests from about 300 to 3000 m (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Deasy et al. 2026).

Tree TSAR uses a narrower Cornus walteri concept than POWO. The Korean C. coreana is provisionally accepted separately, and C. koehneana remains an independent species. The three are closely allied and may require future population-genomic revision, but the current evidence does not justify collapsing them preemptively. Historical confusion with C. wilsoniana arose from mixed early herbarium material, not from synonymy in Tree TSAR’s treatment.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Walter dogwood is a handsome landscape tree where space allows. The deeply textured bark, glossy foliage, broad flower clusters, and tree-sized habit distinguish it from the more familiar shrubby dogwoods. It is commercially available in specialist horticulture and can attain dimensions comparable with wild trees in favorable temperate climates (Deasy et al. 2026).

The species also has practical uses in China. It has been planted for cooking oil and as an urban shade tree. Propagation can be challenging: seed germination is difficult and cuttings are not consistently easy to root, increasing the value of well-documented seed collections (Deasy et al. 2026).

Conservation Concerns

Cornus walteri is assessed as Least Concern and remains widespread in China (Deasy et al. 2026). The principal conservation issue for Tree TSAR is taxonomic resolution rather than species-wide scarcity. Provenance-rich collections from China, Korea, and the boundary zones of C. koehneana are essential for testing whether the three currently recognized species represent durable evolutionary lineages.
