Introduction

African cornelian-cherry dogwood is an evergreen montane-forest tree distributed from South Sudan through eastern and south-central tropical Africa. It is the African geographic outlier of the Macrocarpium clade and can reach roughly 18–24 m in forest. The species bears dense terminal clusters of greenish-yellow or cream flowers and is unusual within Cornus in being dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate trees (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).

Historically, its combination of African distribution, evergreen leaves, and dioecy encouraged recognition as Afrocrania volkensii or placement in an Afrocrania section or subgenus. Modern molecular work does not support maintaining Afrocrania as a separate lineage at those ranks: C. volkensii is securely embedded in the cornelian-cherry clade together with C. sessilis and the four Eurasian species (Xiang et al. 2005; Du et al. 2023). Tree TSAR therefore uses Cornus volkensii and retains Afrocrania volkensii only as a species-level synonym.

The species occupies upland rain forest and related montane forest, often in riparian settings, broadly around 1200–3000 m. Kew’s Flora of Tropical East Africa account emphasizes tolerance of cool conditions and heavy rainfall despite the species’ tropical latitude.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Cornus volkensii has little established horticultural presence outside specialist tropical and subtropical collections. Its size, dioecious reproductive system, and montane ecology make it less convenient for ordinary garden use than the temperate cornelian cherries. Botanical gardens attempting fruit production need both sexes, while collections focused on taxonomy should record sex, provenance, and wild-source locality.

The tree has been used locally for wood, but it is not a major commercial timber. Its practical significance is better understood as part of upland African forest ecosystems and as a distinctive genetic resource within Cornus. The evergreen foliage and large-tree habit also make it valuable for comparative research on how the Macrocarpium lineage adapted to very different continents and climates.

Conservation Concerns

Cornus volkensii is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN and is native across multiple countries from South Sudan southward through eastern and south-central tropical Africa (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026). Its broad distribution reduces immediate global extinction risk, but the species is tied to montane forest systems that can be locally fragmented or degraded.

Conservation should therefore focus on maintaining forest habitat across its elevational range and on preserving geographically representative populations. Because it is the only African member of the clade and has unusual reproductive biology, loss of regional populations would remove disproportionate evolutionary and ecological diversity even without threatening the species globally.
