Tibetan evergreen dogwood

Introduction

Tibetan evergreen dogwood is one of the most recently described large-bracted dogwoods. It was named in 2019 from a small population near 2000 m in north Mêdog County, Tibet, after integrated morphological study distinguished it from the superficially similar Cornus capitata. The species bears four large white bracts but develops remarkably large compound infructescences, commonly 6–8 cm across, much larger than those of typical C. capitata (Lv et al. 2019; Deasy et al. 2026).

Later field interpretation has expanded the known picture beyond the original Tibetan locality: Trees and Shrubs Online reports plants identified as C. sunhangii from Manipur, India. The species also occupies a clear genomic position within Syncarpea, close to C. capitata and the unnamed 04-C33 lineage rather than within the kousahongkongensis complex (Du et al. 2024).

Because the taxon is recent and sparsely sampled, its full range, ecological amplitude, and degree of morphological variation remain incompletely known. Tree TSAR therefore keeps the narrative proportionate to the evidence rather than projecting the better-known biology of other evergreen dogwoods onto it.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

There is not yet an established horticultural tradition for C. sunhangii. The species is of obvious botanical interest because of its unusually large fruits and relationship to C. capitata, but material of verified wild provenance remains scarce. Any living collections should retain collector, locality, elevation, and voucher data.

Until broader cultivation experience develops, cultural guidance is best inferred cautiously from its montane forest origin rather than treated as settled. Its principal present value is scientific and conservation-oriented rather than commercial.

Conservation Concerns

The species has not been formally evaluated on the IUCN Red List. Kew’s Angiosperm Extinction Risk Predictions model classifies it as predicted threatened with confident support, while the original description was based on a very small known population (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026; Lv et al. 2019).

That combination makes field survey a priority. Confirmation of the Manipur occurrence, searches between known localities, population counts, habitat-condition data, and seed or living collections from more than one population would materially improve the conservation picture. A predictive model should not be mistaken for a formal assessment, but it provides a reasonable signal for attention.
