Introduction
Gray dogwood is a deciduous thicket-forming shrub of eastern and central North America, often found in open woods, savannas, thickets, field margins, and other sunny to partly shaded sites. Its white to bluish-white fruits are carried on conspicuous red pedicels. The species belongs to Subgenus Thelycrania and is the northern sister species of C. foemina (Deasy et al. 2026; Lindelof et al. 2020).
The racemosa–foemina boundary is one of the more difficult North American dogwood identifications. Gray dogwood generally has more widely spaced stems, browner mature pith, and usually whiter fruit, while C. foemina tends to have clustered stems and fruits with a bluish cast. None of these characters is infallible alone, so geography, habit, fruiting material, and multiple vegetative characters should be considered together.
Tree TSAR also distinguishes two easily confused names: C. × arnoldiana is the formal hybrid C. obliqua × C. racemosa, whereas “Slavin’s Dwarf” or horticultural “Slavinii” is a dwarf cultivar of C. racemosa and must not be confused with the separate nothospecies C. × slavinii.
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Gray dogwood is adaptable, floriferous, and effective in mass plantings, hedges, wildlife gardens, and naturalized landscapes. It tolerates sun, variable soil moisture, and difficult sites, and its white fruit against red fruit stalks is particularly effective in late summer and autumn (Deasy et al. 2026).
Numerous cultivars have been selected for compact habit, glossy foliage, variegation, salt tolerance, ground-covering growth, or ability to form a small tree. The Counties of Ohio selections illustrate the range of horticultural forms possible within one species. These cultivars are horticultural selections, not accepted botanical varieties.
Conservation Concerns
NatureServe ranks Cornus racemosa G5, secure globally, although the rank was last reviewed in 2016 and is flagged as needing review. The species remains widespread and often abundant in suitable habitat (NatureServe 2026).
Gray dogwood can expand aggressively by vegetative growth when fire is suppressed, particularly in prairie and open wetland systems. Management therefore depends on conservation objective: dense thickets can provide wildlife cover, but uncontrolled shrub expansion may reduce open-grassland habitat. This is an ecological management issue rather than evidence of species-level threat.
