Peruvian dogwood

Introduction

Peruvian dogwood is the principal Central and South American representative of the Swida clade, occurring from Costa Rica through the northern Andes to Bolivia. It is a montane-forest tree that can reach about 20 m, with populations reported on forested slopes and stream banks at roughly 1800-3400 m. Murrell (1996) documented its broad Andean-Central American range and showed that previously separated South American material is best treated as one species.

The species has a particularly important systematic history. Murrell (1996) regarded its morphology as intermediate between older concepts of the core blue-fruited dogwoods and Mesomora and created a separate section, Umbellicrania. Modern genomic evidence instead places C. peruviana within Yinquania. Du et al. (2023) recovered the clade with C. oblonga and C. parviflora, demonstrating that the South American lineage is part of an ancient, geographically fragmented radiation rather than an isolated morphological anomaly.

Tree TSAR accepts C. peruviana without infraspecific taxa. The synonym ledger retains Viburnum peruvianum as a homotypic transfer and the boliviana name cluster as heterotypic synonymy. The original C. peruviana name was published by Macbride in 1929; IPNI records Macbride 3439 from Cani, Huanuco, Peru, as lectotype material.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Cornus peruviana has no major established horticultural or agricultural role in the literature reviewed here. Its natural ecology points to a cool, moist montane-forest species rather than a broadly adaptable lowland ornamental, and it remains uncommon in temperate collections.

Its greatest value to living collections is scientific. As the only South American dogwood lineage in the modern Yinquania concept, well-documented wild-source accessions provide material for studying long-distance biogeography, evergreen adaptation, fruit and endocarp evolution, and the history of the blue-fruited dogwoods. Provenance should therefore be treated as essential collection data rather than optional horticultural metadata.

Conservation Concerns

The IUCN SSC Global Tree Specialist Group and Botanic Gardens Conservation International assessed Cornus peruviana as Least Concern in 2021. POWO accepts a native range from Costa Rica to northwestern Venezuela and Bolivia, including Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru (IUCN SSC Global Tree Specialist Group & BGCI 2021; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).

Least Concern at the global level does not mean that all montane populations are secure. Andean and Central American cloud and montane forests face regionally variable pressures from land-use change, fragmentation, fire, and climate-driven shifts in temperature and moisture. Conserving populations across the north-south range is especially valuable because this species represents the sole South American branch of an otherwise Asian-centered Yinquania lineage.
