Cornus papillosa W.P.Fang & W.K.Hu

Nippleberry dogwood

Introduction

Nippleberry dogwood is a poorly known Chinese shrub or small tree described from high-elevation forests of Sichuan and Yunnan. Flora of China characterizes it by white flowers, black fruit, and leaves with a densely papillose lower surface, often marked by dark streaks and a relatively high vein count (Xiang & Boufford 2005).

Tree TSAR provisionally places Cornus papillosa in Subgenus Thelycrania, principally because its morphology points toward the C. hemsleyi complex. The species has not yet been securely positioned by direct molecular sampling, so the subgeneric assignment is a testable hypothesis rather than a closed question (Lindelof et al. 2020).

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

No established horticultural or agricultural use is documented for Cornus papillosa. The available record is too sparse to justify detailed hardiness or propagation advice.

Authenticated living collections would have unusual scientific value. Voucher-backed plants could supply the DNA-quality material needed to test its placement and could help determine whether the distinctive leaf papillae remain stable across populations.

Conservation Concerns

No formal global conservation assessment was located. Sparse collections do not prove that the species is rare in nature, but they leave range size, population trend, and habitat exposure poorly characterized. Focused surveys in the documented Sichuan-Yunnan mountain region would improve both taxonomic and conservation knowledge.
