Laurel dogwood

Introduction

Laurel dogwood is a subtropical Asian tree distinguished by large, leathery leaves, late-season flowering, and black fruit that matures mainly in winter or early spring. Flora of China records the species from southeastern Yunnan and a broader Himalayan-Southeast Asian range, typically in forest around 1200-1500 m (Xiang & Boufford 2005).

Its affinities were historically uncertain, in part because its leathery foliage and unusual phenology differ from many familiar dogwoods. Later genomic work places Cornus oligophlebia within Subgenus Thelycrania, close to the Chinese C. wilsoniana, rather than in Subgenus Yinquania (Du et al. 2023; Deasy et al. 2026).

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Laurel dogwood appears to be absent or exceptionally rare in temperate cultivation. Its southern distribution and winter fruiting suggest limited cold hardiness, so introduction would be most plausible in mild subtropical or protected collections rather than ordinary cold-temperate gardens.

For botanic gardens, the combination of evergreen-looking foliage and autumn flowering could be distinctive. Any introduction should be treated as experimental and documented carefully because there is little published horticultural experience.

Conservation Concerns

Kew’s current extinction-risk model predicts the species as not threatened with confident support, but a formal species-level IUCN assessment was not located in the sources reviewed here (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026). Its Chinese occurrence is regionally restricted, so conservation interpretation should use the full transnational range rather than Chinese rarity alone.
