Introduction

Caucasian dogwood is a deciduous shrub of the South Caucasus, occurring in ravines, forest margins, and open woodland. It resembles the European blood-twig dogwood complex but is distinguished in regional treatments by features including brown first-year shoots and relatively glossy, dark foliage (Deasy et al. 2026). Tree TSAR recognizes it as a species within Subgenus Thelycrania rather than reducing it beneath C. sanguinea or C. australis.

The species occupies an important geographic position between European and western Asian dogwoods. Direct population-level genomic study remains limited, so its precise relationship to C. sanguinea ssp. australis and the Tajik C. darvasica deserves further testing.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Caucasian dogwood is rare in gardens. Its glossy foliage and compact shrubby habit can be attractive, but it has not developed the cultivar culture of C. sanguinea or C. alba. Trees and Shrubs Online places it approximately in USDA Zones 7-8, reflecting a milder-climate profile than many familiar red-stem dogwoods (Deasy et al. 2026).

For botanical collections, verified Caucasian provenance is more significant than selection for ornamental traits. Authenticated accessions could help resolve both the species’ boundaries and its conservation status.

Conservation Concerns

Current global information is insufficient for a confident threat picture. The IUCN status reported through Kew and Trees and Shrubs Online is Data Deficient, while regional assessments can differ. The appropriate response is better distributional and demographic information, particularly from natural populations across Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, rather than inferring security from the presence of a few cultivated plants.
