Cornus hongkongensis ssp. melanotricha
Tufted Hong Kong dogwood
On this page
Introduction
Tufted Hong Kong dogwood is a south-central Chinese subspecies of Cornus hongkongensis named for its characteristic dark axillary hair tufts. Mature leaves are otherwise comparatively sparsely pubescent, making the concentrated trichomes in the vein axils a useful diagnostic feature (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Deasy et al. 2026).
The taxon is accepted at subspecies rank by Tree TSAR and Kew. Chloroplast analyses have sometimes placed melanotricha well outside core hongkongensis samples, but limited sampling and the reticulate history of Syncarpea make that signal insufficient by itself to justify species rank (Guan et al. 2024).
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Subsp. melanotricha is among the better represented hongkongensis lineages in specialist temperate collections, including documented Chinese collections from Sichuan and neighboring regions. High-elevation provenances can be appreciably hardier than lowland material, making collection locality important in garden evaluation (Deasy et al. 2026).
Its evergreen foliage and late bracted display suit mild woodland gardens, but it should not be treated as uniformly hardy across all accessions.
Conservation Concerns
The subspecies has no independent global conservation category separate from the Least Concern parent species. Its narrower geographic range and uncertain genomic boundary nevertheless justify preserving multiple wild provenances.
Because axillary pubescence has been used heavily for identification, vouchers should retain mature leaves and locality data; molecular sampling without confident identification could otherwise reinforce rather than resolve the existing taxonomic uncertainty.
