Cornus hongkongensis ssp. elegans (W.P.Fang & Y.T.Hsieh) Q.Y.Xiang — Showy evergreen dogwood

Introduction

Showy evergreen dogwood is an eastern Chinese subspecies of Cornus hongkongensis, recorded from southeastern China and associated with the lower-altitude eastern portion of the species complex. It is distinguished in traditional keys by relatively inconspicuous secondary and tertiary leaf venation, in contrast with the more clearly veined leaves of several other subspecies (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Deasy et al. 2026).

The subspecies is particularly relevant to Tree TSAR’s treatment because genomic work places the former C. elliptica lineage close to eastern hongkongensis, reinforcing the view that substantial taxonomic diversity is nested within a single, recently diversified complex (Du et al. 2024). Tree TSAR retains ssp. elegans as an accepted subspecies while recognizing neighboring ssp. angustata [Chun] TSAR* separately.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Subsp. elegans is much less familiar in Western horticulture than generic C. hongkongensis material, although Trees and Shrubs Online notes its use as an amenity tree within eastern China. For ex situ collections, documented provenance is more valuable than an unverified subspecific label because the characters separating the hongkongensis subspecies can be subtle.

Conservation Concerns

No separate global Red List category is routinely reported for ssp. elegans. The parent species is Least Concern, but this eastern Chinese subspecies occupies a much smaller range than the species as a whole (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).

Conservation collections should therefore retain locality and voucher information. The current taxonomic framework is useful, but future genomic sampling may refine boundaries among elegans, angustata, and neighboring eastern lineages.
