Cornus hongkongensis ssp. angustata [Chun] TSAR*

Introduction

Chinese evergreen dogwood is Tree TSAR’s subspecific treatment of the eastern Chinese angustata–elliptica lineage. Historically the same biological cluster has been placed as Cornus kousa var. angustata, C. capitata var. or ssp. angustata, Dendrobenthamia angustata, and, in Flora of China, as the species C. elliptica. Tree TSAR retains that nomenclatural history but places the lineage within C. hongkongensis (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Du et al. 2024).

The change is driven principally by phylogenomics. RAD-seq analyses recover C. elliptica embedded within the C. hongkongensis complex, particularly near the eastern Chinese ssp. elegans, rather than as a lineage closely allied to typical Himalayan C. capitata. The divergence among these hongkongensis lineages is comparatively recent and occurs in a complex where introgression is documented. Tree TSAR therefore favors subspecies rank rather than maintaining C. elliptica as a separate species (Du et al. 2024).

The epithet angustata preserves the nomenclatural continuity of this entity, while the bracketed prior authorship plus TSAR* makes clear that C. hongkongensis ssp. angustata is an editorial working combination rather than a formally published botanical name.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Plants of this lineage have long circulated in gardens under several names, especially C. capitata ssp. angustata, C. elliptica, or older combinations. They are evergreen big-bracted dogwoods suited to mild, humid climates and are generally grown for glossy foliage, white bracts, and red compound fruits.

Accurate relabeling is especially useful in botanical collections because horticultural accessions can otherwise perpetuate the old assumption that angustata belongs within C. capitata. Provenance and voucher identity should be retained whenever a cultivated plant is moved into the Tree TSAR hongkongensis concept.

Conservation Concerns

No separate global conservation assessment exists under the Tree TSAR working combination. Conservation information is fragmented among records treated as C. elliptica or C. capitata ssp. angustata by other authorities.

The most useful conservation response is therefore taxonomic traceability: retain locality, voucher, and historical-name data so occurrences can be reconciled across competing classifications. The lineage should not simply inherit the broad Least Concern status of C. hongkongensis without attention to its more restricted distribution.
