Cornus glabrata Benth.

Brown dogwood

Introduction

Brown dogwood is a deciduous thicket-forming shrub of California and Oregon, occurring along stream banks, roadsides, fields, and meadows. Its relatively small narrow leaves, brown to reddish branchlets, and white to blue fruits distinguish it from many other western dogwoods. The species belongs to Subgenus Thelycrania (Deasy et al. 2026).

Genomic evidence clarifies an otherwise surprising relationship: C. glabrata is recovered as sister to eastern North American C. obliqua, with that pair close to C. amomum. The pattern contributes to the complicated geographic history of Subgenus Thelycrania, in which several North American lineages are separated by large modern gaps in distribution (Lindelof et al. 2020; Du et al. 2023).

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Cornus glabrata is uncommon as a formal ornamental but can be useful in western native-plant landscapes, stream restoration, and broad naturalistic plantings. It accepts moist sites and can form thickets, so it is better suited to spaces where lateral spread is welcome than to tightly constrained beds.

Trees and Shrubs Online places the species roughly in USDA Zones 7-10. Its blue or white fruit and colored young stems can be attractive, but its strongest horticultural case is regional ecological fit rather than showy flowers or large-bracted display.

Conservation Concerns

Trees and Shrubs Online summarizes Cornus glabrata as Least Concern. Its native range is confined to California and Oregon but extends across many watersheds and habitat types within that region (Deasy et al. 2026).

Riparian alteration, drought, and changes to stream hydrology can affect local stands. Conservation collections should preserve geographically distinct provenance because the species represents a western branch of a lineage whose closest sampled relative occurs far to the east.
