Swamp dogwood

Introduction

Swamp dogwood is a deciduous shrub or small tree of marshes, swamps, stream banks, and other wet habitats in the southeastern United States. Fruits are usually whitish-blue, and their pedicels become red as they mature. The species belongs to Subgenus Thelycrania and forms a close sister pair with the more northerly gray dogwood, C. racemosa (Deasy et al. 2026; Lindelof et al. 2020).

Separating C. foemina from C. racemosa can be difficult from isolated material because branch color, pith color, fruit color, and pubescence all vary. Flora of North America also emphasizes habit: stems of C. foemina often cluster more tightly, while those of C. racemosa tend to be more widely spaced. The nomenclature is unusually tangled because C. candidissima was used by different authors for different concepts; Tree TSAR keeps the Miller name with C. foemina and does not allow that history to collapse the two species.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Cornus foemina is adaptable in cultivation and can thrive in ordinary garden soils as well as moister sites, although its natural wetland ecology makes it especially appropriate near water or in native wetland plantings. Its white flowers, dark foliage, pale fruit, and persistent red fruit stalks provide understated seasonal interest (Deasy et al. 2026).

The species is best used where a naturalistic shrubby dogwood is wanted rather than as a formal specimen. Because cultivated plants outside their natural context can be particularly difficult to separate from C. racemosa, accurate labels should be supported by fruiting material and, where collections are taxonomically important, voucher specimens.

Conservation Concerns

Cornus foemina is assessed as Least Concern in Kew-linked conservation data and has a broad southeastern United States range. The species as a whole is not currently near extinction (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).

Local populations remain dependent on wetlands, riparian woods, and hydrologically intact lowlands. Drainage, development, and channel alteration can remove habitat even where the species remains secure globally. Maintaining regional provenance in restoration material is also useful because the southern foemina lineage is evolutionarily distinct from C. racemosa despite their superficial similarity.
