Introduction
Eastern flowering dogwood is one of the signature understory trees of eastern North American forests and one of the most culturally and horticulturally important dogwoods. Its spring display is produced by four large white to pink involucral bracts surrounding a compact head of small true flowers; red drupes and vivid autumn foliage extend its ornamental season. Wild plants occur in deciduous, mixed, and pine forests from southeastern Canada through much of the eastern United States into Mexico (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2016; Deasy et al. 2026).
Tree TSAR recognizes two subspecies. The widespread nominate ssp. florida encompasses the familiar eastern North American form, while Mexican ssp. urbiniana has fewer flowers, more persistent apically connected bracts, and larger fruits. Genomic work confirms substantial differentiation of the Mexican lineage, but Tree TSAR retains subspecies rank because the total evidence does not yet require species status (Du et al. 2024; Moreau et al. 2024).
Within subgenus Cynoxylon, C. florida is allied to C. disciflora and C. nuttallii. It also contributes to two major named horticultural hybrid groups: C. × transamericana with C. nuttallii and C. × rutgersensis with the Asian C. kousa.
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Flowering dogwood has been cultivated for centuries and now exists in a large cultivar spectrum selected for white, pink, or red bracts, variegated foliage, plant size, growth habit, autumn color, and disease response. It performs best in acidic to neutral, organic, well-drained soil with reliable moisture. In hot climates, some protection from intense afternoon sun can reduce stress; in cool maritime climates it often requires a warmer, brighter position than its forest-understory ecology might suggest (Deasy et al. 2026).
Disease resistance has become a central breeding objective. Dogwood anthracnose, caused by Discula destructiva, can kill wild and cultivated trees, especially in cool, moist, shaded settings. Powdery mildew has also reshaped nursery production. Resistant C. florida cultivars and interspecific hybrids with C. kousa have therefore become important components of modern dogwood horticulture (Daughtrey et al. 1996; Molnar & Capik 2013).
Named cultivars are propagated clonally. Seed propagation remains useful for conservation, restoration, and breeding because it retains recombination, but seedlings do not reproduce cultivar traits predictably.
Conservation Concerns
At the global species level, Cornus florida is assessed as Least Concern. That status reflects its very broad range and should not obscure the ecological effects of dogwood anthracnose, which caused severe mortality after emerging in North America in the late twentieth century (Daughtrey et al. 1996; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).
Conservation therefore has two distinct scales. Across the broad range, maintaining genetically diverse forest populations is important despite a secure global category. At the southern edge of the complex, ssp. urbiniana represents a distinct Mexican lineage whose genomic and morphological identity warrants separate attention even while it remains within C. florida in Tree TSAR.
