Introduction

Darvoz dogwood is a rare deciduous shrub endemic to Tajikistan. It grows in moist deciduous forest, river valleys, and gorge-side thickets, with broad leaves, flat flower clusters, and rounded fruit. The species belongs to Subgenus Thelycrania and appears morphologically allied to the Caucasian and western Eurasian dogwoods around C. sanguinea, although it has not yet been adequately sampled in modern molecular studies (Deasy et al. 2026).

The conservation history is unusually important to understanding the species. It was initially known from a very narrow locality near Kivron in the Darvoz region, which underpinned its Critically Endangered assessment. Later floristic work documented it more widely in mesic Pamir-Alai walnut forest and warm, wet plane-tree valleys. Those additional records improve knowledge of the range but do not by themselves constitute a reassessment of extinction risk (Deasy et al. 2026; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Cornus darvasica is extremely rare in cultivation. A few botanical collections have maintained plants, making authenticated accessions disproportionately important for both ex situ conservation and taxonomic research (Deasy et al. 2026).

Cultivation should aim to reproduce its native preference for moisture-retentive, fertile soils without prolonged waterlogging, and collections should retain wild locality data whenever possible. Because very little horticultural experience exists, broad claims about hardiness or propagation are not justified.

Conservation Concerns

The IUCN lists Darvoz dogwood as Critically Endangered, and Kew’s independent angiosperm risk model also predicts it as threatened (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026). Later discoveries show that the species is not restricted to the single locality once assumed, so an updated field-based assessment is warranted.

Conservation priorities include confirming the number and size of populations across the Pamir-Alai, protecting moist deciduous forest and river-valley habitat, and establishing genetically documented ex situ collections from more than one population. The very small cultivated representation should not be mistaken for an adequate conservation backup.
