Introduction
Giant dogwood is a deciduous forest tree of the Himalaya and East Asia, extending from the central Himalaya across China to Korea, Japan, the southern Kurils, and northern Indo-China. Mature trees can reach about 20 m and often develop broad, horizontal tiers of branches, giving rise to the familiar “wedding cake tree” appearance in cultivation. White flower clusters in late spring are followed by dark purplish-red to bluish-black fruits (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Trees and Shrubs Online 2026).
Together with Cornus alternifolia, it forms subgenus Mesomora. The pair is one of the clearest eastern Asia-eastern North America disjunctions within dogwoods. RAD-seq data strongly support the sister relationship, while divergence-time analyses place their separation in the Miocene (Lindelof et al. 2020). C. controversa is usually much more tree-like than its North American counterpart and can form a tall canopy or subcanopy tree under favorable forest conditions.
Tree TSAR accepts no botanical infraspecific taxa. Historical varieties such as var. alpina, var. angustifolia, and var. shikokumontana remain useful pieces of taxonomic history but have not been shown to represent durable evolutionary lineages. The variegated name complex is horticultural and is best represented by cultivar “Variegata”. Older East Asian literature also misapplied names such as C. sanguinea and C. macrophylla to this species; those usages should not be read as taxonomic synonymy.
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Cornus controversa is one of the most architectural dogwoods in temperate horticulture. A specimen allowed sufficient space can develop layered horizontal branching that is particularly effective as a lawn or woodland-edge tree. Moist loam is often recommended, but established trees tolerate a useful range of reasonable soils provided drainage is adequate. Cool-summer climates and reliable moisture favor the best growth (Trees and Shrubs Online 2026; NC State Extension 2026).
Propagation is possible by seed, cuttings, or layering. Named cultivars are usually grafted, ideally on C. controversa seedlings. Grafting onto shrubby dogwoods can produce suckering and may prevent the full tree habit from developing. The silver-margined “Variegata” is the best-known cultivar and represents a cultivated clone rather than an accepted botanical variety.
Flora of China records two additional practical uses in the native range: oil extracted from the fruit has been used in lubricating and soap manufacture, and the leaves have been used in folk remedies for pain and swelling. These are documented uses, not evidence of established clinical efficacy (Xiang & Boufford 2005).
Conservation Concerns
Cornus controversa is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN. It has a broad native range and occurs in broad-leaved or mixed broad-leaved-coniferous forests from roughly 200 to 2600 m in China, with additional populations across the Himalaya, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Nepal, Taiwan, and Vietnam (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026; Xiang & Boufford 2005).
The global status does not eliminate local concerns associated with forest loss, fragmentation, and climate change across such a large range. Maintaining wild-source material from multiple regions is also valuable for horticulture because cultivated plants represent only a small portion of the species genetic diversity.
