Introduction
Chinese cornelian-cherry dogwood is a deciduous tree or large shrub of montane and temperate forests in China and the eastern Himalayan region. Mature trees can reach about 10 m, with large elliptic to lanceolate leaves, deeply impressed venation, dense pale pubescence beneath, and yellow umbel-like flower clusters that appear before the leaves. The small drupes mature dark, often nearly black, distinguishing the fruit visually from the red-fruited Cornus mas and C. officinalis more familiar in cultivation (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Deasy et al. 2026).
Within Tree TSAR, C. chinensis belongs to the Macrocarpium clade and formally to Cornus subg. Cornus. It was once segregated as the sole or principal member of Sinocornus, but modern phylogenomics shows that excluding it makes the remaining Eurasian cornelian cherries nonmonophyletic (Du et al. 2023). The historical Sinocornus name therefore belongs in the classification narrative rather than the species synonym field. Tree TSAR recognizes no infraspecific taxa; the named forms recorded by Kew are treated as historical morphological variants rather than evolutionary units.
The species is related to the other Eurasian cornelian cherries, especially C. eydeana, C. mas, and C. officinalis. Earlier molecular work recovered a close chinensis–eydeana relationship, while newer genomic analyses retain the same four-species Eurasian assemblage but caution against overformalizing smaller internal clades because some relationships remain dataset-sensitive (Xiang et al. 2005; Du et al. 2023).
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
In gardens, Chinese cornelian-cherry dogwood is valued for its unusually bold foliage and early yellow flowers. Hardier mainland Chinese provenances have improved its horticultural prospects, whereas some early western material from the Tibetan frontier proved too tender for many temperate collections. Trees and Shrubs Online places the species broadly in USDA Zones 8–9 and RHS H4, although provenance can matter substantially (Deasy et al. 2026).
Its native ecology points toward fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils in woodland or forest-edge settings. In the wild it occurs from roughly 700 to 3500 m, including steep ravines and mixed forests. Vegetative propagation by semi-ripe cuttings or grafting has been used in cultivation. The large leaves and architectural habit can make the tree effective even before flowering or fruiting.
The fruit is used medicinally in China in a manner comparable to C. officinalis (Xiang & Boufford 2005). That traditional use is important ethnobotanically, but it should not be conflated with demonstrated clinical efficacy. Horticultural labeling also requires care because the name Cornus chinensis has historically been confused in the trade with C. kousa ssp. chinensis, an unrelated big-bracted dogwood.
Conservation Concerns
No formal global IUCN assessment was located for Cornus chinensis. Kew’s 2024 angiosperm risk model predicts the species as not threatened with confident model support, while the broad geographic treatment in current horticultural and floristic sources does not suggest a narrowly restricted taxon (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026). Modelled extinction-risk predictions are useful screening tools but are not substitutes for a species-level Red List assessment.
Conservation value lies partly in preserving geographic provenance across a wide elevational and regional range. Because hardiness and horticultural performance differ among introductions, genetically documented wild-source material is useful both for ex situ conservation and for horticultural evaluation.
