Himalayan evergreen dogwood

Introduction

Himalayan evergreen dogwood is a broadleaved evergreen tree or shrub of montane forest from the Himalaya into southwestern China and neighboring regions. It bears four to six creamy-white or pale yellow showy bracts around compact flower heads and later develops red to purple-red compound fruits. The species grows naturally in evergreen and mixed forest, often in deep shade between about 1000 and 3200 m, although cultivated plants generally flower best with more light (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Deasy et al. 2026).

Within Syncarpea, C. capitata is allied to C. sunhangii and the still-unnamed 04-C33 lineage, while C. hongkongensis and C. kousa belong to another part of the radiation (Du et al. 2024). Tree TSAR treats C. capitata as monotypic at subspecies rank. Kew currently includes ssp. angustata, but Tree TSAR transfers that eastern angustata–elliptica lineage to C. hongkongensis because genomic evidence places the former C. elliptica within the hongkongensis complex rather than with typical capitata (Du et al. 2024).

The resulting concept emphasizes the Himalayan and southwestern Chinese C. capitata lineage without forcing the eastern Chinese angustata material into it. Morphological intermediates in parts of China remain important evidence of gene flow or incomplete separation within this young radiation.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Cornus capitata is grown for evergreen foliage, creamy bracts, and edible strawberry-like fruits. Modern high-altitude introductions have proved hardier than older horticultural literature suggested, though the species still performs best in relatively mild climates. It tolerates woodland conditions but flowers more freely in an open site with dependable soil moisture (Deasy et al. 2026).

Seed propagation is straightforward if ripe fruits are processed before drying; clonal propagation is preferred for named selections. The fruits are edible and are locally sold as food in parts of Asia, but the species remains primarily an ornamental tree rather than a major fruit crop.

Conservation Concerns

The broad species is currently treated as Least Concern. Its extensive mountain range spans several countries, but local populations can still be affected by forest conversion, fragmentation, and climate-driven shifts in montane habitat (Deasy et al. 2026).

Tree TSAR’s narrower circumscription has a practical conservation implication: eastern Chinese plants assigned by other sources to C. capitata ssp. angustata are counted instead within the C. hongkongensis complex. Conservation inventories should therefore record the taxonomic concept used rather than assuming that all database occurrences refer to the same biological lineage.
