Introduction
Creek dogwood is a deciduous riparian shrub of western North America, growing along river and stream banks, wet meadows, bogs, marshes, and lake shores. It resembles red-osier dogwood (C. sericea) but typically has a woollier lower leaf surface and a distinctly ridged fruit stone. Both belong to Subgenus Thelycrania, and molecular work supports recognizing the western lineage as a separate species (Deasy et al. 2026; Du et al. 2023).
Tree TSAR uses Cornus californica C.A.Mey., published in 1845, as the accepted name. Flora of North America uses C. occidentalis, while POWO has recently used C. torreyi; the 2026 Trees and Shrubs Online synthesis identifies C. californica as the earliest species-rank name for the same lineage. Historical use of “C. × californica” for smooth-stoned intermediates with C. sericea represents a different hybrid concept and must not be confused with the accepted species.
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Creek dogwood is primarily a habitat and restoration shrub rather than a mainstream ornamental. Its preference for wet ground makes it useful along streams, pond edges, and other moisture-retentive sites where a native thicket-forming shrub is appropriate. The white fruits and colored stems provide seasonal interest and wildlife value.
Cultivated material should be identified carefully because older nursery and regional-flora names may appear as C. occidentalis, C. torreyi, or within C. sericea. The selection ‘Mason’ has been associated with this western complex, but cultivar identity should not be allowed to obscure the species-level nomenclatural decision.
Conservation Concerns
Trees and Shrubs Online lists Cornus californica as not evaluated globally. The species is geographically broad in the Pacific West, but it is tied strongly to wetland and riparian habitats that can be altered by water diversion, channel engineering, grazing, and development.
Conservation and restoration should prioritize locally sourced material and the hydrologic processes that maintain riparian habitat. Accurate taxonomy is itself relevant to conservation because records filed under C. sericea, C. occidentalis, or C. torreyi may represent the same Tree TSAR species concept and can fragment occurrence data across names.
