Introduction

Bretschneider dogwood is a deciduous shrub or small tree of northern and central China, growing in forest, thickets, and on mountain slopes. Its bluish-black to black fruit is typical of many members of Subgenus Thelycrania, while older stems can develop a distinctive pale yellow to yellow-green color that has attracted horticultural attention since the species was first described (Xiang & Boufford 2005; Deasy et al. 2026).

The species belongs to the difficult western Chinese radiation that also includes C. hemsleyi, C. scabrida, and C. poliophylla. Tree TSAR retains C. bretschneideri as a species but does not accept the historical varieties gracilis or crispa as separate evolutionary taxa. Molecular work places the species close to C. poliophylla, an affinity that is phylogenetically informative without collapsing the two (Lindelof et al. 2020; Du et al. 2023).

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Bretschneider dogwood is uncommon but established in botanical cultivation. The pale older stems and red young growth can provide winter interest, while the species’ Chinese mountain origin gives it useful cold tolerance; Trees and Shrubs Online places cultivated material broadly in USDA Zones 5-8 (Deasy et al. 2026).

The species is best suited to a spacious shrub border, woodland edge, or collection where its subtle stem and foliage characters can be appreciated. Because plants have been confused with neighboring Chinese dogwoods, horticultural accessions benefit from voucher-backed provenance.

Conservation Concerns

No formal global IUCN category is emphasized in the sources reviewed here. Kew’s extinction-risk model currently predicts C. bretschneideri as not threatened, while its range spans a substantial part of northern and central China (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026). The more immediate conservation need is to maintain geographically representative wild-source material rather than relying on a small number of cultivated introductions.
