Introduction
South Chinese dogwood is a poorly known shrub or small tree described from southern China. Flora of China records plants about 3-6 m tall, with thinly leathery leaves, white flowers in corymbose cymes, and black fruit. Known records come from Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Hunan, with collections from thickets at about 2500 m (Xiang & Boufford 2005).
Tree TSAR provisionally places Cornus austrosinensis in subgenus Yinquania, but this placement should be read as a working phylogenetic hypothesis rather than a directly sequenced result. Lindelof et al. (2020) explicitly omitted the species from their RAD-seq analysis because available information was insufficient for confident placement. Its evergreen habit, low vein number, black fruit, and apparent affinities with C. oblonga or C. parviflora make Yinquania plausible, while the expanded genomic framework of Du et al. (2023) strengthens the biological coherence of that affinity set. Molecular sampling of authenticated C. austrosinensis remains the decisive missing test.
Nomenclaturally, the species is simple. The workbook recognizes only the homotypic combination Swida austrosinensis. No accepted infraspecific taxa or named hybrids are recognized.
Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
No established horticultural or agricultural role is documented for Cornus austrosinensis. Flora of China noted that few herbarium specimens were available to the authors and that living plants had not been observed during preparation of the treatment, underscoring how little cultivation information can be stated reliably (Xiang & Boufford 2005).
For botanical collections, the species is potentially valuable precisely because it is poorly represented. Any authenticated living material should retain detailed provenance, voucher linkage, and collection locality. Such material could support the molecular work needed to test its provisional Yinquania placement.
Conservation Concerns
No formal global conservation assessment was located for Cornus austrosinensis. Its documented range spans several provinces of southern China, but the sparse specimen record and limited ecological information make confident conclusions about population size or trend inappropriate.
The most useful conservation action is improved documentation: verified field surveys, georeferenced populations, living collections tied to vouchers, and DNA-quality material from authenticated plants. These data would clarify both extinction risk and infrageneric placement without treating rarity in collections as proof of rarity in the wild.
