Introduction

Pagoda dogwood is a deciduous understory shrub or small tree native across much of eastern North America. Its tiered branching and unusual leaf arrangement give it a distinctive architectural form, while flat clusters of cream-white flowers are followed by dark blue fruits on reddish stalks. The species occupies deciduous hardwood forest, woodland edges, rocky slopes, and stream- or swamp-adjacent habitats from low elevations to about 2000 m (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2016; Trees and Shrubs Online 2026).

Tree TSAR places Cornus alternifolia in subgenus Mesomora, the two-species alternate-leaved dogwood lineage. RAD-seq phylogenomics strongly recovered it as sister to the East Asian C. controversa, an eastern North America-East Asia disjunction nested near the base of the blue- or white-fruited dogwoods (Lindelof et al. 2020). Both species also share the unusual chromosome number 2n = 20 and leaves that are not consistently opposite, a conspicuous departure from the usual dogwood pattern.

No botanical infraspecific taxa are accepted by Tree TSAR. The long historical list of named forms and varieties includes variegated, pale-fruited, and red-stemmed plants, but modern horticulture treats the best-known phenotypes as cultivars rather than evolutionary varieties. The former Cornus × acadiensis, once proposed as a C. alternifolia × C. sericea hybrid, is not retained in the Tree TSAR hybrid roster after type material was redetermined as ordinary C. sericea.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Pagoda dogwood is valued primarily as an ornamental small tree for its horizontal tiering, spring flowers, dark fruit, and autumn color. It performs best in slightly acidic, reliably moist but well-drained soil and in climates with cool summers. Sun is tolerated where moisture is dependable, but afternoon shade can improve performance in hotter climates, especially for variegated or yellow-leaved selections (Trees and Shrubs Online 2026).

Seed generally benefits from several months of cold stratification. Softwood cuttings can root under controlled mist or fog, while cultivars are commonly grafted onto seedling C. alternifolia or C. controversa. Plants grown as shrubs need little structural pruning; developing a single-trunked specimen requires training or gradual removal of lower branches.

Golden canker is the major species-specific horticultural concern. Beier et al. (2015) showed that the causal fungus, now Aurantioporthe corni, can live endophytically in apparently healthy stems and later cause disease. The study isolated the fungus from 62.5% of asymptomatic wild stems sampled in Minnesota and demonstrated pathogenicity experimentally. This biology helps explain why sanitation alone cannot fully eliminate risk in susceptible plants.

Conservation Concerns

Trees and Shrubs Online summarizes Cornus alternifolia as Least Concern, and the species remains widespread across eastern Canada and the eastern and north-central United States. Global extinction risk is therefore low at present, although abundance varies greatly across the range and southern populations can be localized (Trees and Shrubs Online 2026; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).

Conservation value is not limited to species persistence. The Mesomora lineage represents a deep intercontinental disjunction, so geographically representative wild populations preserve evolutionary history and locally adapted genetic diversity. Golden canker can cause substantial mortality in landscapes and natural stands, but it is not presently understood as a range-wide extinction threat.
