Siberian dogwood

Introduction

Siberian dogwood is a deciduous, usually multistemmed shrub of temperate Eurasia, characteristic of mixed forests, thickets, and stream margins. White to bluish-white fruits follow the small cream-white flowers, but in cultivation the species is best known for vividly colored winter stems. It belongs to Subgenus Thelycrania and is the Eurasian counterpart of North American C. sericea (Deasy et al. 2026).

Although C. alba and C. sericea have often been combined or treated as geographic derivatives of one another, phylogenomic evidence supports maintaining them as distinct species. Lindelof et al. (2020) recovered a deep Eurasian-North American split dating to the Miocene rather than a recent population subdivision. Tree TSAR therefore accepts both species and treats the numerous named forms of C. alba as horticultural or historical variants rather than evolutionary infraspecific taxa.

Horticultural and Agricultural Uses

Among the shrubby dogwoods, Cornus alba is one of the most important ornamentals for winter stem color. Cultivars span bright red through dark purple-brown stems, while others are selected for variegated, golden, or dark foliage. Plants are commonly cut hard on a recurring cycle because vigorous young shoots show the strongest bark coloration (Deasy et al. 2026).

The species is tolerant of cold climates and moist soils and is well suited to mass planting where winter display is a primary design objective. Cultivar names such as Sibirica Group, Elegantissima, and Kesselringii belong to horticultural classification; their conspicuous differences do not justify recognition as botanical subspecies or varieties.

Conservation Concerns

Cornus alba occupies a broad native range across northern Eurasia and is not currently flagged by Kew risk modeling as threatened. It is also widely cultivated and has naturalized beyond its native range in parts of Europe and North America (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026).

Conservation value lies more in preserving geographically representative wild populations than in protecting the familiar garden clones. Ex situ collections intended for genetic conservation should therefore record wild provenance and avoid treating long-cultivated stem-color selections as substitutes for native genetic diversity.
