Family Overview
Fabaceae Lindl., the Legume Family, is one of the largest and most ecologically consequential families of flowering plants. It belongs to Fabales and occurs on every continent except Antarctica, with members occupying tropical rainforests, seasonally dry forests, savannas, deserts, Mediterranean shrublands, temperate grasslands and woodlands, alpine environments, and heavily modified landscapes. Fabaceae is the third-largest flowering-plant family by species diversity, after Asteraceae and Orchidaceae, with approximately 22,000–22,500 species. Tree TSAR currently recognizes approximately 810 living natural genera. The family includes many of the world’s most important food, oilseed, forage, timber, ornamental, and soil-improving plants. The Legume Family spans an exceptional range of growth forms. In Tree TSAR PGF terms, its diversity includes woody trees, shrubs, and vines; woody-based perennial subshrubs; herbaceous perennials; annuals; and several more specialized growth strategies. Leaves are commonly alternate and stipulate and may be pinnate, bipinnate, trifoliolate, unifoliolate, or simple. In some drought-adapted lineages, flattened petioles or phyllodes assume much of the photosynthetic function of the leaf blade. The characteristic fruit develops from a single carpel and is typically a legume, although this basic structure has diversified into dehiscent, indehiscent, winged, fleshy, woody, and jointed forms. Floral architecture is equally diverse. The strongly bilateral papilionoid flower, typically organized into a standard petal, two wings, and a keel, characterizes much of Papilionoideae but is neither ancestral nor universal in Fabaceae. Other lineages bear nearly radial flowers, less strongly differentiated bilateral flowers, or dense heads and spikes in which numerous stamens become the dominant visual feature. Phylogenomic reconstruction indicates that keel flowers have been gained and lost repeatedly. Their presence alone also does not explain the exceptional diversity of Papilionoideae; nodulation, chemical defenses, pollinator interactions, genome duplication, and repeated expansion into new climates and biomes appear to have acted together. Repeated morphological convergence is one reason Fabaceae became such an important test case for molecular systematics. Radial or nearly radial flowers, jointed fruits, climbing habits, trifoliolate foliage, and specialized pollination mechanisms have each evolved independently in different parts of the family. Classifications based primarily on conspicuous resemblance therefore sometimes united plants that were not one another’s closest relatives.
Molecular evidence has not simply fragmented Fabaceae into ever-smaller genera. Modern systematic work has produced nearly every possible outcome. Some historically broad groups have been dismantled, some genera have expanded by absorbing segregates, other genera have been reinstated, new genera continue to be described, and several exceptionally large traditional genera have proved remarkably robust. The history of Fabaceae therefore illustrates a broader systematic principle: morphological characters become most informative when their evolutionary history is understood rather than assumed.
Names and Modern Classification
Tree TSAR accepts Fabaceae Lindl. as the family name. Leguminosae Juss. is retained as an important historical alternative because it remains deeply embedded in botanical and specialist legume literature, but Tree TSAR treats it as deprecated in favor of Fabaceae. This treatment follows the site’s convention for historical family names rather than presenting Leguminosae as the preferred name.
The traditional division of Fabaceae into Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoideae, and Papilionoideae no longer represents the evolutionary history of the family. Broad molecular sampling demonstrated that the traditional Caesalpinioideae was not monophyletic, leading the Legume Phylogeny Working Group to recognize six subfamilies: Cercidoideae, Detarioideae, Duparquetioideae, Dialioideae, Caesalpinioideae, and Papilionoideae. These six major lineages have remained strongly supported as genomic sampling has expanded. (Legume Phylogeny Working Group 2017; Zhang et al. 2026)
The former Mimosoideae presents the most conspicuous change. Acacia, Mimosa, and their relatives belong to a major radiation nested within the recircumscribed Caesalpinioideae rather than to a separate subfamily equivalent to it. The comprehensive 2024 classification of Caesalpinioideae recognizes this expanded mimosoid lineage formally as tribe Mimoseae, one of eleven tribes within the subfamily. (Bruneau et al. 2024)
Classification below subfamily is less uniform across Fabaceae. Some portions of the family now have detailed phylogenetically supported tribal systems, while the enormous Papilionoideae remains an active area of higher-level classification. Recent analyses using plastid, mitochondrial, and large nuclear datasets strongly support the six subfamilies and most established tribes but also identify additional papilionoid lineages that may warrant formal tribal recognition. Tree TSAR therefore uses Subfamily as the universal infrafamilial level on the Fabaceae family page rather than combining mature and provisional tribal systems into a single table. The Tree TSAR genus roster is likewise a systematic synthesis rather than a copy of a single global database. Recent specialist studies have dismantled some traditional generic concepts, reinstated others, established new genera, and demonstrated that some long-recognized genera remain phylogenetically sound despite great morphological or species diversity. Continued change at genus rank is therefore expected, but uncertainty in species limits or deep phylogenetic placement does not by itself make an otherwise well-supported genus unstable.
An Explosive Early Radiation
Fabaceae appears to have originated during one of the most consequential transitions in Earth’s biological history. Fossil-calibrated phylogenomics places the earliest diversification of the family close to the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, approximately 66 million years ago, when the end-Cretaceous mass extinction transformed terrestrial ecosystems. The earliest unequivocal legume fossils appear soon afterward, and the principal lineages represented by the modern subfamilies differentiated rapidly during the early Cenozoic. (Koenen et al. 2021; Cai et al. 2025)
The speed of that early radiation helps explain why the deepest branches of Fabaceae have been unusually difficult to resolve. The six subfamilies themselves are strongly supported, but different parts of the genome do not always recover exactly the same relationships among them. Whole-genome duplication, incomplete lineage sorting, gene flow, and ancient reticulation have all contributed to this complex signal. Recent analyses have found evidence of independent genome duplications associated with the major subfamilies and patterns consistent with ancient allopolyploid origins in several lineages. (Koenen et al. 2021; Stai et al. 2026; Zhang et al. 2026)
Such phylogenetic conflict is biologically meaningful. A plastid tree and a nuclear tree can legitimately preserve different aspects of a lineage’s evolutionary history if hybridization, introgression, plastid capture, or incomplete lineage sorting occurred during its diversification. Fabaceae provides unusually clear examples of why disagreement among genomic datasets should not automatically be interpreted as analytical failure.
Nitrogen Fixation and Ecological Expansion
Fabaceae is famously associated with biological nitrogen fixation, but the common simplification that all members of the family form nitrogen-fixing root nodules is incorrect. Nodulation within Fabaceae is restricted to Papilionoideae and Caesalpinioideae and is unevenly distributed even within those subfamilies. It is especially persistent through major papilionoid and mimosoid lineages, while non-nodulating groups and evolutionary losses occur elsewhere. (de Faria et al. 2022)
The anatomy of the symbiosis also varies. In many successful nodulating lineages, nitrogen-fixing bacteria are enclosed within host-cell membranes to form symbiosomes. Comparative evidence suggests that this more intimate cellular arrangement increased the evolutionary stability of nodulation and may help explain its long-term persistence in some of the largest radiations of Fabaceae. Nitrogen fixation nevertheless represents only part of the family’s ecological success. Fabaceae diversified repeatedly in tropical forests, savannas, seasonally dry vegetation, Mediterranean-climate regions, deserts, temperate grasslands, montane systems, and other environments. Independent radiations occurred on different continents and in very different growth forms. The present global distribution of the family is therefore the product of repeated geographic and ecological expansions rather than a single worldwide adaptive radiation. Horticultural and Agricultural Uses
Few flowering-plant families rival Fabaceae in the breadth of their relationship with people. Domestication occurred independently in widely separated branches of the family. Major food and oilseed crops occur in Glycine, Arachis, Phaseolus, Vigna, Cajanus, Cicer, Lathyrus, and Vicia, while additional cultivated food plants occur in Lablab, Macrotyloma, Psophocarpus, Pachyrhizus, and Apios. Species of Medicago and Trifolium are among the family’s most important forage and pasture plants. This repeated domestication of distantly related lineages provides a direct link between the evolutionary history of Fabaceae and the history of agriculture. (Hughes et al. 2025)
Genomic research is increasingly revealing how much useful diversity remains within cultivated lineages and their relatives. Comparative pangenomic analysis across major domesticated Fabaceae has identified extensive variation associated with domestication, genome evolution, nodulation, seed traits, and other agronomically important characteristics. Such resources provide breeders with genetic variation that may be useful for improving productivity and environmental resilience. (Wang et al. 2025)
Biological nitrogen fixation gives many cultivated Fabaceae an additional agricultural function. Grain, forage, pasture, and cover-crop species can reduce dependence on externally supplied nitrogen and contribute biologically fixed nitrogen to rotations and mixed plantings. The amount fixed is highly variable, however, and depends on plant genotype, microbial symbiont, soil nitrogen, climate, water availability, stand composition, and management. Biological nitrogen fixation is therefore better understood as a managed plant–microbe interaction than as an automatic consequence of growing a member of Fabaceae. (Ghafoor et al. 2024)
Crop wild relatives are consequently important genetic resources. Wild populations preserve variation that may have been reduced or lost during domestication, including traits relevant to drought, temperature, pests, diseases, nutrient acquisition, and other environmental stresses. Conservation of these populations in their native habitats, combined with complementary ex situ germplasm collections, maintains a broader pool of genetic variation for future breeding and food security. Fabaceae is also exceptionally important in ornamental horticulture. Species of Cercis, Wisteria, Laburnum, Lupinus, Baptisia, Lathyrus, Robinia, Erythrina, Delonix, Calliandra, Acacia, and many other genera are cultivated for flowers, foliage, growth habit, shade, or ecological value. Their cultural requirements vary as widely as their native habitats. Family membership alone therefore provides little guidance for siting: native ecology, provenance, mature size, cold hardiness, moisture regime, drainage, and invasive potential are much more informative.
The family also contains one of cultivated botany’s most unusual generic entities. + Laburnocytisus ‘Adamii’ is a graft chimaera derived from tissues of Laburnum anagyroides and Chamaecytisus purpureus, rather than a sexual intergeneric hybrid. Different portions of an individual can express characteristics associated with either component or with the chimaeric combination. Tree TSAR therefore retains + Laburnocytisus as a special generic entity and uses the non-italicized + symbol, separated from the genus by a space, to indicate its graft-chimaeric origin. Fabaceae also supplies commercially important timber, dyes, gums, resins, medicinal materials, flavoring compounds, and other plant products. Genera including Dalbergia, Pterocarpus, Afzelia, Guibourtia, and Pericopsis contain valued timber species; Indigofera has been historically important as a source of dye, Cyamopsis is cultivated for industrial gum, and Glycyrrhiza contains economically important aromatic and flavoring plants. These uses illustrate the family’s extraordinary chemical and structural diversity while also creating conservation pressures in some lineages.
Conservation Issues
No single threat adequately describes a family containing more than twenty-two thousand species. Conservation problems in Fabaceae include loss and fragmentation of tropical forests and seasonally dry vegetation, altered fire regimes, grazing pressure, urbanization, agricultural conversion, direct commercial exploitation, climate change, and biological invasion. Narrowly endemic taxa in islands, mountains, drylands, and other geographically restricted habitats can be especially vulnerable because only a few populations may contain much of a species’ remaining genetic diversity.
The enormous size of Fabaceae also conceals major gaps in basic knowledge. An analysis based on the contemporary global legume backbone found that nearly one-fifth of accepted species lacked occurrence records meeting the study’s quality filters. Geographic, taxonomic, and molecular coverage is particularly incomplete for many poorly collected tropical taxa. These gaps have direct conservation consequences because a species cannot be effectively assessed or protected when its distribution, identity, or evolutionary relationships remain poorly understood. Commercial exploitation is especially important among timber-producing Fabaceae. CITES regulates international trade in numerous members of the family, including broad listings within Dalbergia and listed taxa or populations in Afzelia, Dipteryx, Guibourtia, Paubrasilia, Pericopsis, Pterocarpus, and other genera. Accurate identification, traceable supply chains, sustainable harvest, habitat protection, and effective enforcement are therefore closely linked conservation problems in these lineages. (CITES 2025)
The agricultural importance of Fabaceae creates a different conservation priority. Wild relatives of cultivated lineages preserve genetic variation with potential value for breeding, including traits associated with environmental stress and disease resistance. In situ protection allows that diversity to continue evolving under natural conditions, while genebanks and other ex situ collections provide complementary security and accessibility. Integration of these approaches is increasingly important as agriculture responds to changing climates and emerging biological stresses. (Maxted & Magos Brehm 2026)
Fabaceae also contains a striking example of modern extinction at genus level. Streblorrhiza speciosa was endemic to Phillip Island in the Norfolk Island group and disappeared after scientific documentation. Because Streblorrhiza contained no other accepted species, its extinction represents the loss of an entire documented legume genus from the living flora. Tree TSAR preserves the lineage in its systematic treatment under its extinct-after-discovery convention. (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2026b)
The family also includes lineages that have become highly invasive after introduction beyond their native ranges. Examples occur within Pueraria, Acacia, Prosopis, Leucaena, Robinia, and other genera. The traits involved differ among lineages and may include rapid growth, vegetative spread, high seed production, persistent seed banks, disturbance tolerance, or symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Fabaceae therefore spans a striking ecological spectrum, from recently extinct and narrowly endemic taxa to plants capable of rapid expansion far beyond their native distributions.
Major Clades
Tree TSAR recognizes six subfamilies within Fabaceae. Their monophyly is strongly supported, although some of the earliest relationships among them remain affected by genomic conflict associated with rapid diversification, incomplete lineage sorting, gene flow, and ancient polyploidy. Cercidoideae is a comparatively small lineage containing Cercis and the diverse bauhinioid genera. Its members include trees, shrubs, and lianas and exhibit substantial variation in foliage and floral structure. The subfamily occupies an important position in understanding the early diversification of Fabaceae and lacks the nodulation found in parts of the two largest subfamilies.
Detarioideae is predominantly tropical and overwhelmingly woody. It contains many canopy and emergent forest trees as well as lineages characteristic of seasonally dry vegetation. Genera such as Afzelia, Brownea, Copaifera, Detarium, and Hymenaea illustrate its ecological and economic breadth. Detarioideae represents one of the major early woody radiations of Fabaceae.
Duparquetioideae contains only Duparquetia, an African climbing lineage that is sufficiently isolated phylogenetically to constitute a subfamily by itself. Its extreme disparity in size compared with Papilionoideae and Caesalpinioideae illustrates how unevenly diversification proceeded among the six major legume lineages.
Dialioideae is predominantly tropical and composed largely of woody plants. It includes Dialium and a morphologically varied collection of genera historically associated with broad concepts of caesalpinioid legumes. Molecular evidence instead supports these plants as a distinct major lineage within Fabaceae.
Caesalpinioideae is the second-largest major radiation of Fabaceae and contains trees, shrubs, lianas, and functionally herbaceous forms. Its modern circumscription includes the entire former Mimosoideae. The 2024 higher classification recognizes eleven tribes, including Mimoseae, which contains Acacia, Mimosa, Albizia, Inga, and numerous allied genera. Phylogenomic research has substantially reorganized generic and tribal boundaries within the subfamily. (Bruneau et al. 2024)
Papilionoideae is by far the largest subfamily and contains most of the major agricultural lineages of Fabaceae as well as a large share of its temperate diversity. Keel flowers are widespread but not universal, and early-diverging lineages show that this characteristic floral architecture evolved after the origin of the subfamily. Papilionoideae contains numerous major radiations, including genistoid, dalbergioid, inverted-repeat-lacking, and millettioid–phaseoloid lineages, together with exceptionally species-rich genera such as Astragalus. Nuclear phylogenomics has greatly improved resolution of its major branches, but portions of its formal tribal classification remain under active development. (Cai et al. 2025; Zhang et al. 2026)
